Insights from a large-scale inventory in the southern Brazilian Atlantic Forest Scientia Agricola
Vibrans,Alexander Christian; Gasper,André Luís de; Moser,Paolo; Oliveira,Laio Zimermann; Lingner,Débora Vanessa; Sevegnani,Lucia.
ABSTRACT: A key issue in large-area inventories is defining a suitable sampling design and the effort required to obtain reliable estimates of species richness and forest attributes, especially in species-diverse forests. To address this issue, data from 418 systematically distributed 0.4 ha plots were collected. Estimators of nonparametric species richness were employed to assess the floristic representativeness of data collected in three forest types in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The sampling sufficiency of forest attributes was evaluated as a function of sample size. Altogether, 831 tree/shrub species were recorded. The data acquired through the systematic sampling design were representative of both species richness and basal area. The confidence...

Inventário de Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. em Santa Catarina Acta Botanica
Gasper,André Luís de; Sevegnani,Lucia; Vibrans,Alexander Christian; Uhlmann,Alexandre; Lingner,Débora Vanessa; Verdi,Marcio; Dreveck,Susana; Stival-Santos,Anita; Brogni,Eduardo; Schmitt,Ronnie; Klemz,Guilherme.

The last giant Araucaria trees in southern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Scipioni,Marcelo Callegari; Dobner Jr.,Mário; Longhi,Solon Jonas; Vibrans,Alexander Christian; Schneider,Paulo Renato.
ABSTRACT: Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze is a native tree species of major importance in southern Brazil. It is a regional symbol due to its iconic shape and stature in the landscape; its wood was once economically important and its seeds are an important source of food for the fauna and are presently used in regional cuisine. Despite its importance and apparent abundance, the species is facing extinction mainly as a result of unregulated exploitation and deforestation. This study catalogued the remaining individuals in order to add to the body of knowledge available on A. angustifolia, a species that has become rare across its historic range. The circumference at breast height (1.30 m), the total height, and the tree volume were measured (3,529...

Toward a better understanding of the subtropical Atlantic Forest in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil: tree sampling accuracy, species richness and frequency of rare species Acta Botanica
Rezende,Vanessa Leite; Eisenlohr,Pedro V.; Gasper,André Luís de; Vibrans,Alexander Christian; Oliveira-Filho,Ary Teixeira de.
Accurate knowledge of floristic composition is crucial when planning and designing research projects and public policies. In this study, our goal was to assess tree sampling accuracy and to identify sites with higher concentrations of rare tree species, as well as those with the highest tree species richness, in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. We determined sampling accuracy using the first-order jackknife and Chao 2 estimators, calculated the number of rare species (singletons and doubletons) and applied sampled-based rarefaction. We found that sample accuracy (estimated vs. observed values) was over 90% for the state as a whole, the best estimates having been obtained for the areas of rain forest (first-order jackknife: 91%; Chao 2: 95%). Of the...
